Since 1999, the Canadian Cancer Society has hosted Relay For Life, a dynamic dusk-to-dawn event for cancer patients, cancer survivors and families.
The first Relay For Life in Canada was held in Ottawa, and organizer Louise Kroon remembers, "The participants were so happy that the battle was recognized at the battle stage but also at the healing stage and at the full survival stage."
Relay For Life brings together communities to celebrate cancer survivors, remember loved ones lost to the disease and fight back in the hope of finding a cure. The money raised is used to support leading research, advocate for cancer-related public policies and continue to host support programs and information services.
Today, Relay is hosted in more than 496 communities nationwide, and it has raised over $439 million since it began.
