Story 33

Our volunteers help change cancer forever

Nancy Hamill

Nancy's passion stems from her own battle with the disease. She is proud to be a cancer survivor and her experience has inspired her to share the story of her cancer journey to help others. Nancy organizes information sessions and makes presentations about cancer prevention, advocacy and the importance of living a healthy lifestyle. She has also been a guest speaker at numerous events including high school graduations. It's no exaggeration to say she inspires Islanders of all ages.

Nancy was the founding member of Relay For Life in her area, and she and her team of friends continue to participate each year. Her team is consistently among the highest fundraisers on PEI. Over the past 11 years, they've raised more than $100,000 to help the Society fund important cancer advocacy and research efforts.

As a result of her perseverance and hard work, Nancy was named to the Order of Prince Edward Island in 2008 — making her the youngest person ever to receive the prestigious honour.
